Turkey

The domestic turkey, is a domesticated form of the turkey (Meleagris gallopavo). Turkeys are among the largest and most robust poultry birds. They have a very large size, heavy body, slim neck, small head, and long legs.

Turkeys originates from southern Mexico (the states of Jalisco, Guerrero, and Veracruz). Before the arrival of Europeans, it was domesticated by the indigenous people, who likely tamed the wild species native to their land. Either from Mexico or the West Indies, turkeys (before 1524) were brought to Spain and from there, in the same year, to England. Shortly thereafter, they also reached France.

Currently, domesticated turkeys are raised across almost all of Europe and can be found in semi-wild conditions in some areas in England and Germany. (Source: Wikipedia)

Turkey also fits perfectly on the Finnish Christmas table! In Ostrobothnia, there are also some producers who raise turkeys. The Bengs family in Övermark raises free-range meadow turkeys on their farm called Hemmanet. They also operate a farm shop at the same location where you can purchase delicious turkey products. You can find the shop on the Farm Shop Map!
