Eggs


Eggs are nature's versatile nutritional powerhouse containing high-quality protein. Eggs contain several minerals and trace elements. Eggs contain all the nutrients the human body needs except for vitamin C.

 

Eggs have many uses in cooking and baking

They add lightness to muffins and shine to buns. Eggs make sauces and puddings creamy. Eggs provide texture and height to cakes. Eggs give a crispy texture to meringues. Eggs emulsify salad dressing. Eggs enhance the taste, nutritional value, texture, color, and appearance.

In Finland, there is a functioning salmonella control, which means that salmonella does not occur in eggs. You can therefore safely let your child practice cracking eggs or taste the cookie dough.

 

From the henhouse to the egg packing station

Hens live in henhouses, and in Finland, there are four different types of them.

  • Organic eggs are produced in organic henhouses.
  • Eggs from free-range hens are produced in floor-based henhouses.
  • Conventional eggs are produced in enriched cage henhouses.
  • Free-range eggs come from floor-based henhouses where hens have the opportunity to go outside.

 

Hens lay one egg per day

From the henhouses, the eggs are transported to the egg packing stations, where they are inspected, weighed, stamped with production information, and packed in egg cartons of various sizes. Samples are also taken in the packaging facilities to partially ensure that the eggs do not contain salmonella. Then the eggs are transported to your store where you can buy them! Or you can buy directly from the farmer, on the "farm shop map" you will find the producers!

Eggs are best kept in the refrigerator or at a consistent temperature in their own packaging. Eggs should be stored with the blunt end up. The best-before date is on the egg carton, but an undamaged egg will keep longer if stored correctly. When cracking an egg, you can smell it to see if it is no longer usable.
